EDR was acquired by the MDL Research Group in July 2005 having originally been founded in 1973 as one of the first research companies specialising in multi-country European research.

EDR has developed a high level of expertise in the area of international travel research, having conducted large-scale airport-based surveys every year since 1986 under the name of International Air Travel Surveys (IATS). In January 2003 IATS was established as a wholly-owned EDR subsidiary to give it a separate identity as a company operating worldwide and specialising in the travel market.
