IATS Airport & Duty Free Surveys

The IATS Duty/Tax Free Shopping Surveys have been carried out at frequent intervals since 1989 in Western Europe, Asia, the Middle East, Africa, North and South America.

The purpose of these surveys is to provide comprehensive information about duty and/or tax free shopping in selected airports and ferry routes. The standard information provided is -

  • Passenger awareness of duty free allowances
  • Passenger ratings of the duty/tax free shops
  • Incidence of visiting the shops
  • Incidence of buying in the shops
  • Types of products bought
  • Amount spent on each type of product
  • Reasons for buying/not buying in the shops

For alcohol, cigarettes and fragrances only -

  • Quantities bought
  • Brands bought
  • Prices paid
  • Reasons for buying product
  • Reasons for brand choice
  • Person for whom bought
  • Perceived cost saving
  • Influence of special offers and promotions

These surveys are usually carried out on a syndicated basis for a number of clients but may also be carried out on a confidential, custom-designed basis, if required.

All IATS airport surveys incorporate measures of customer satisfaction with the airports themselves. These measures provide comparative ratings that can be used by the airport managements to assess their performance against other airports in their region and to improve their services to passengers. The value of these measurements can be judged by these comments from airport representatives -

“The reports provide us with a valuable measure of the quality of our passenger services, compared with those of other participating airports.”
Aeroports de Paris.

“IATS provides BAA with a well-researched and completely independent source of data in a number of key service and commercial issues which are simply not available elsewhere. We find it extremely useful.”
BAA - London Heathrow and Gatwick.

“On the basis of these results we can measure the improvement in our image . We can also use the data for our product control to analyse the development since 1986.”
Flughaven Frankfurt/Main.

“A comprehensive non-biased and well-conducted survey”
Civil Aviation Authority of Singapore.

Other ad hoc surveys are also carried out in international airports for the airports themselves and on behalf of clients wishing to survey an upmarket international audience.

The planning, administration and analysis of all these surveys is carried out entirely by IATS, using local field personnel in each country. A total of over one million air travellers have been surveyed since 1986, in more than sixty international airports and over thirty different countries.
